Before I became a Jeep owner, I built several very trailworthy Suzukis, Toyotas, and military vehicles. I have always waved at well-built 4x4s, but now that I'm a Jeep owner, I wave at every Jeep I pass no matter how modified it is. Sure, soccer moms aren't very likely to wave back, but that's not the point.

Soal tenaga yang dihasilkan, jangan takut kalah sama mesin bakar konvensional. C evolution diklaim punya tenaga puncak 47 hp. Top speednya bisa ngebut sampai 120 km/jam, ini setara dengan mesin 600 cc seperti yang digunakan matik BMW terdahulu, C 600 Sport dan C 650 GT.

It's time for an upgrade. Yep, this long-time Ford guy is considering a Dodge Ram. This time I have my sights set on a 4x4, one-ton, SRW. Why a Dodge? Because I can simply get more truck for the money by going with one rather than a Ford. For the same price, I can get a 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel and many other features and options not found in my Ford F-250. Now, Ford's 6.2L gasser is a fine engine, it's been great for us on our trips, but I sure miss having a diesel and the Cummins is a proven workhorse. A 4x4 diesel means we can boondock far off the beaten path and tackle steep grades getting there.
Why buy now? Because buying at the end of the year means I can get some serious discounts and rebates totaling $10,000. Not only that but the dealerships are motivated to move their old 2013 stock before the end of the month and the end of the year. It's also a good time to trade-in my 2011 Ford F-250. It only has 17,000 miles and there's still one year left on the original manufacturer warranty. In addition, what I owe on it is close to what it's worth, so I won't be losing much money on a trade-in. So you can see it's a great time for us to shop for a new truck.

BFGoodrich came up with an entertaining short film advertisement for their Radial All-Terrain T/A-KO tires entitled Playground Earth. They set up a series of five different extreme outdoor sports, and in place of a baton the teams passed a single set of tires from one vehicle to another to demonstrate how these versatile tires are designed to handle just about anything thrown at them.

Dutch John Trail at the Uwharrie National Forest in Troy, North Carolina Kansas Rocks Recreation Park in Mapleton, Kansas Truckhaven in Salton Sea, California
Since its inception in 2006, The Outstanding Trails program has been dedicated to the responsible use and preservation of off-road trails. In the last eight years, Outstanding Trails has recognized more than 30 off-road trails throughout the country and has awarded over $115,000+ in grants in support of trail conservation efforts.
“The legacy of the Outstanding Trails program is a great source of pride for BFGoodrich,” said Duane Thomas, brand communications manager for BFGoodrich Tires. “We’re grateful for the efforts of the many four-wheel drive clubs and their volunteers for working with us in our quest to help maintain some of North America’s most beautiful trails.”

Dutch John Trail at the Uwharrie National Forest is a 2.1-mile trail maintained by The Carolina Trail Blazers 4WD Club, a family oriented club formed in 1971. The Carolina Trail Blazers 4WD Club was instrumental in the development of the Uwharrie Off-Highway Vehicle trails, which it has been maintaining since they were first opened to 4WD use.
Kansas Rocks Recreation Park is a not-for-profit park open to the public, boasting trails for beginners and experienced outdoor enthusiasts alike. The park is maintained by The Brush Beater Jeep Club and is open to all makes of four-wheel drive vehicles.
Truckhaven is the host of the annual Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari. The trails consist of sandy washes, rocky canyons, deep gorges with near perpendicular walls and great hill climbs. Tierra Del Sol has a history with this area going back over 50 years and is involved with constant renovations and improvements for Truckhaven to improve the quality of its off-road trails.
“The three trails and clubs recognized in 2013 are some of the best we’ve seen to date,” said Lori McCullough, executive director of Tread Lightly!. “We are excited to see the great work that these clubs will do to help improve and conserve access to these trails.”

Earlier this year, Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) filed suit against California State Parks to stop current operations at Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area. CORVA consulted with their attorney, Jesse Barton, and at his recommendation filed for intervenor status in the Superior Court of California. CORVA's demurrer supported State Parks and alleged to the court that the suit filed by PEER had no legal viability and must be dismissed by the court. Judge Timothy Frawley ruled in favor of State Parks and CORVA on December 12th, 2013 and upheld the right of State Parks to continue operations at Ocotillo Wells SVRA in the same manner enthusiasts around the state have enjoyed for over 30 years.

Pada helatan Extreme Ride Adventure Challenge (XRACE), bukit Hambalang, Bogor Minggu lalu, salah satu pesertanya tampil dengan Yamaha X-Ride yang cukup menarik. Enggak dibikin nyeleneh, tapi tunggangan Nanno Gomez bikin orang ingin melirik dan mengetahui lebih banyak.
Sepertinya pria yang berkecimpung di dunia event organizer ini, serius mempersiapkan tunggangannya untuk tampil di X-Race. Bahkan salah satu anggota X-Rider Adventure (XRAD) ini, menyerasikan apparel yang dipakai dengan tunggangannya.
“Dasarnya memang doyan adventure off-road, tapi dengan motor batangan. Tertarik beli X-Ride karena dari namanya dan kesimpulannya bisa dipakai buat kegiatan yang ekstrem,” jelas Nanno.
Soal tampilan tunggangannya itu, Nanno bilang dari awal kepegang tangan langsung diubah dari standarnya. Seperti pada bagian stiker yang disesuaikan dengan keinginannya dan pemakaian ban pacul ukuran 14 inci belakang dan 17 inci di depan.
Tampilan memang membuat X-Ride Nanno terlihat lebih keren. Tapi yang enggak kalah pentingnya, tentu apa yang sudah dilakukan pada sektor utama pendukung performa motor.
“Baru untuk urusan upgrade performa, khusus disiapkan untuk turun di ajag X-Race. Biar bisa pulang bawa piala,” paparnya.
Upgrade performa yang dilakukan, dengan memasukkan piston ukuran garis tengahnya 54 mm. Itu membuat kapasitas mesin X-Ride terdongkrak sampai 130 cc.
Aliran gas buang, juga dibikin plong. Caranya enggak ada lain, dengan memasangkan knalpot racing berlabel CLD tipe 2.
Mesin atas sudah dikondisikan agar bisa bersaing. Tapi enggak akan dapat hasil maksimal, bila bagian samping alias CVT enggak dikondisikan untuk bisa mendukung apa yang sudah dilakukan di mesin atas.
Bagian CVT diseting agar bisa lebih responsif, dengan memasukkan gigi rasio milik Yamaha Nouvo. Selain itu, juga dilakukan penggantian per CVT aftermarket yang 1.500 rpm. “Roller yang dipakai juga lebih ringan, yakni 6 gram,” kata Nanno.
Dengan semua yang sudah dilakukan itu, pada time trial perorangan bisa nangkring di urutan 6 dan bersama 2 rekannya di XRAD, bisa menggondol juara 1 time trial team.

This weekend I performed some much needed maintenance on my road and weather beaten Torklift Tie Downs. In case you're unfamiliar with the system, the Torklift Tie Downs consist of four independent, frame-mounted tie down receivers that work much like a standard hitch receiver as the tie down inserts are removable. This means that when you're not hauling around your truck camper, the tie down receivers are practically undetectable. No other system keeps your camper secure to your truck like the Torklift tie down system.
The only real negative with Torklift's system is that the receivers and inserts sit less than a foot off the ground. This means that they are constantly being exposed to dirt, road grime, and moisture. Consequently, periodic maintenance is required to protect them and keep them looking good.
Truth be told, maintaining the two driver side and front passenger tie down inserts isn't that difficult. Cleaning and spray painting them once a year is all that's needed. But it's a completely different story with the rear passenger side tie down. This particular insert takes a real beating on outings as it's directly behind the engine's exhaust. The heat from the exhaust blisters and blasts away at the tie down's powder coating leaving it rough, filthy and rusted. As a result, more attention on this one piece is needed in the form of sanding, cleaning, priming, and painting.
The photos below show the basic sequence of taking care of this tie down insert. The first picture doesn't really illustrate how bad of a beating this tie down took. Parts of the tie down felt like 60 grit sandpaper. I applied three coats of black gloss spray paint after sanding and priming. I used Rustoleum spray paint for extra protection.

Later this week I'll be removing the tie down receivers for sanding and painting. The receivers actually take more abuse than the inserts since they're always on the truck, so more work will be required for these.
This is uncomfortable. I'm not a person who gripes a lot. But I've tried to accommodate Walgreens customer card, and it's not working for me.
In the past, perhaps two years ago, I was a happy Walgreens customer. I liked some of their products, like the cans of nuts, and the stores were very close and handy. There are three close enough to me to be considered convenient stopping places. One is very handy. I particularly liked the fact that they would often have instant discounts -- buy two cans of nuts and the second would be cheaper.
And then they instituted their Balance Rewards card system. I first ran up against it when the discount on the counter top was rejected at the checkout. The fine print supposedly said I only got the discount when I had their card. So... no discount for me any more. I didn't like it. And I didn't feel like signing up for Yet Another Card.
So, I continued to shop at Walgreens, but each and every special I saw under the products left a sour taste in my mouth. Specials for other people, not for me. And then at checkout. "Do you have the card?" "No." "Would you like to sign up?" "No". Over and over and over again. Some clerks were particularly insistent and kept giving me the hard sell, even after I said "No."
That lasted a year. I stopped buying several of the products that I had previously enjoyed. It was just too distasteful. And then I discovered that my wife had signed up. It was a let-down. My principled resistance meant nothing. Walgreens still had their hooks into our customer data.
So, I signed up, and added Walgreens to my iPhones passbook so I wouldn't have to deal with a physical card or recite my phone number like everyone else does.
It's not working out. Checking out is smoother. I just set my phone down on the counter next to the products and they scan it as well as the goods. But last week, they printed out a ten dollar discount strip -- I guess the results of my bonus points. However a closer look showed that there was a time limit -- one week from issue. This wasn't money back to me, it was just another enticement to spend some money at their store.
So, today, on the last day of the ten dollar discount, I decided I needed a couple of items. I could go to HEB or a convenience store, but since I had a ten dollar discount, why not Walgreens?
I picked up my three items and went to the checkout. I set them down with my coupon and my cell phone. They were scanned, and then the clerk said I wouldn't be able to use the discount, because it required a $30 dollar minimum. My purchases only came up to $17.
After a moment's hesitation, I said "It's not worth it," and walked off, leaving my products and my absolutely worthless bonus coupon for the clerk to deal with. I heard her calling for a manager to handle the cancellation as I walked out, but I couldn't deal with it. Once again, Walgreens had used the 'fine print' to turn a potential pleasurable shopping experience into a resolve to stop doing business with them.
I know that I can't fight it. The fine print was there, and I have to face up to the decision that I must closely check every potential bonus or sale that Walgreens offers me, or just not deal with them anymore. In spite of nice people at the store, the company isn't friendly anymore. I suppose I'll still go there for some drugs and emergency bandages and the like, but it's not on my list as a convenient place to pick up cokes or paper towels. I guess I need to see what the CVS stores are like.
Yesterday, I did some much needed maintenance on my Suburban Water Heater. It's recommend that RV'ers maintain their water heaters once a year, especially in areas where the water has a high mineral content. Unfortunately, many neglect this basic yet very important part of RV ownership and eventually suffer the consequences in poor operation and high maintenance costs. Fortunately, maintaining your RV's water heater isn't very difficult, but it does take a little forethought and planning.
Water heater maintenance consists largely of draining and flushing out the tank. You may be wondering why doing this annually is necessary. The reason is because of mineral build-up. Over time, the minerals contained your your water builds up and forms a corrosive coating over the internal components of your water heater. These internal components include the tank itself as well as the heating element and heating tubes. You may think that mineral build-up isn't that big of a deal, but you might be surprised by what you see the first time you perform this maintenance. Each time I've drained my water heater in the previous RV's I've owned, I've been shocked at the amount of mineral build-up. Without a doubt at least a 1/2 cup of minerals has come out each time I've performed this maintenance. Here are the basic steps needed to maintain your water heater: 1. Drain Tank: This is a pretty simple process but can get you hurt if you're not careful. First, make sure the water has cooled off sufficiently before you begin work (many like to turn off their water heaters the night before). Don't take this lightly. Newbies often get burned from the scalding hot water, so please don't overlook this step. Next, release the pressure in your tank by opening the pressure relief valve at the top of the tank. With the valve open, remove the drain plug from the bottom of the tank to allow the water inside to drain out. For Suburban models, you'll need a 1 1/16 inch socket to remove the anode rod while for Atwood models, you'll need a 7/8 inch socket to remove the drain plug (Atwood models are made of aluminum and don't require an anode rod).
2. Flush Tank: To perform this task you'll need a so-called flushing wand. You can purchase one at any RV Parts store for around $7 and is a good item to have in your RV maintenance kit. These connect to a standard garden hose and come with a small valve to turn the water on and off. Simply, insert the wand into the drain hole and turn on the water. Make sure you rotate the wand as you flush out the tank to ensure all areas of the tank are getting clean. At first, the water draining out will have a milky appearance from the high mineral content, but will soon clear up. When the water clears up you know that the tank is clean.

3. Clean Tank: This process is a bit more involved and should be done every two or three years (the periodicity depends on the quality of the water where you live). This is done by using a combination of white vinegar and fresh water, usually a 50/50 ratio. Getting this mixture into your water heater tank can be accomplished in one of two ways: by using your RV's winterizing system intake or by attaching a hose with the appropriate sized fitting directly to the water heater drain and filling the tank manually. Once the mixture is in your tank, turn on the water heater and allow the hot water inside to boil for at least a couple hours, more time is better. Once this is accomplished, turn off the water heater again and allow the water inside to cool off. Remove the drain plug and flush out the tank again using the flushing wand procedure as stated above.

4. Inspect Anode Rod (Suburban water heaters only): This inspection is simple yet very important. The rod portion, which is made of magnesium, is actually molded to the drain plug and acts as a magnet of sorts to attract the corrosive elements and minerals found in your water. The anode rod is essentially sacrificing itself for the good of your water heater. Anyhow, the anode rod is quite large when brand new and installed. Over time, the rod deteriorates and should be changed out as required. This is another reason why it's important to clean and inspect your water heater annually. It's also a good idea to have a spare anode rod on-hand at all times. Camping World sells these for around $20 a piece.
So how long does an anode rod typically last? It depends. The mineral content where you live really plays a large role in how often you need to change yours out. Here in Arizona I can usually go two years before I need to replace mine. But I know many who live in areas where the mineral content is low, like in Washington State, Idaho, and Montana, can go as long as four years and sometimes longer.
